Pre and Post Care Instructions

Neuromodulator (Toxin) Pre/Post Treatment Instructions

Before Treatment

  • Avoid taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Fish oil, Ginko Biloba, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of vitamin E for 2-3 days prior to treatment, as these may cause increased risk of bleeding and bruising at the treated site(s). Regular multi-vitamins and Tylenol® are permitted (If not contraindicated).
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior to the procedure, as this can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising at the treated site(s).
  • Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or the use of hair removal creams in the area(s) to be treated.
  • Take Tylenol® (if not contraindicated) 1 hour prior to your appointment to help with any discomfort you may have if you have concerns about discomfort.
  • Always inform your doctor of all medications, including supplements you may be taking, as well as your medical history.

Precautions

You will not be considered a candidate for ‘Tox injections if you have any of the following:

  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Allergy to Botulinum Toxin
  • Neuromuscular disorder
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Allergy to human albumin

After Treatment

  • The results of your treatment can take up to 14 days to take full effect. Usually, patients notice a change in 4 to 5 days. It takes time for the muscles to lose strength and the lines to fade following ‘tox treatment. Please wait until 14 days have passed before assessing if you are pleased with the results.
  • Do not touch or rub the injected site for 2-4 hours following treatment. Avoid exercise and sweating for the remainder of the day, and do not lie down or lean forward for 2-4 hours after treatment.
  • There can be a slight chance of bruising at the treated site; this is temporary. Be assured that any tiny bumps or marks will go away within a few hours of treatment.
  • Avoid any facial, microderm abrasion, or massage for 7-14 days after treatment.
  • You can take Tylenol after treatment if you are experiencing discomfort (if not contraindicated).
  • Your satisfaction is important to us! We would like you to return to the office 14-21 days after treatment for a complementary follow-up, especially after your first treatment. This will ensure we are able to see how your facial muscles react to your treatment.
  • Remember your sunscreen every day.

Filler Pre/Post Treatment Instructions

Before Treatment

  • Avoid taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Fish oil, Gingko Biloba, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of vitamin E for at least 5-7 days before your appointment, unless medically necessary.
  • You may take Tylenol® (if not contraindicated) one hour before your appointment to prevent any discomfort you may experience if you have concerns about discomfort.
  • If you are taking prescription blood thinners such as Coumadin or Plavix, you should check with the prescribing doctor to see if you are able to stop these medicines for 7-10 days before your appointment and at least two days after the procedure has been done.
  • If you have any history of Herpes Simplex (cold sores) on your face, make sure you inform the doctor that you have made your appointment one week prior to your appointment; this will allow us adequate time to prescribe a medication to prevent an outbreak.
  • Avoid dental procedures (including cleaning) 2 weeks pre-filler and 2 weeks post-filler.
  • Come to your appointment with a clean face. **This means NO MAKEUP**
  • Eat a small meal or a snack before your appointment.
  • Bruising and swelling will be worse for the first 24-48 hours after you receive your dermal filler injections. Refrain from exercising for the remainder of the day following your injection(s). You should refrain from going to any special events during this time, so plan accordingly.

After Treatment

  • After filler treatment, especially in the first 24-48 hours following treatment, it is important to watch for signs of vascular compromise or occlusion. These symptoms can include but are not limited to severe, throbbing pain at or around the treated area, blanching or dusky coloration at or around the treated area, development of pustules, and swelling. Should any of these symptoms occur, call the clinic immediately, night or day, at (910) 557-2443. The provider will instruct you on what to do.
  • The majority of reactions to dermal fillers are redness, swelling, bruising, and tenderness after the injections. These usually subside a few days after the treatment but can last longer. If any of these symptoms persist longer than a week, or if you develop other symptoms, please get in touch with our office.
  • You may take Tylenol (if not contraindicated) every 4-6 hours after the treatment to help with any discomfort you may have.
  • Makeup may be applied 24 hours after the treatment if no complications are present, such as open wounds, bleeding, or infection.
  • In the first 24 hours following treatment, limit exposure to sunlight or UV lamps. Extensive sun or heat exposure and alcoholic beverages may cause a temporary increase in redness, bruising, or swelling at the injection sites. If sun exposure is unavoidable, use a sunblock with an SPF of 30 or greater, combined with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
  • Patients should avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours to prevent moving the filler or increasing blood flow to the face.
  • Avoid taking aspirin (unless medically necessary) or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Fish oil, Gingko Biloba, St. John’s Wort and high doses of vitamin E for five days after the treatment, as these may cause an increased risk of bleeding or bruising at the injection sites.
  • Avoid excessive touching or massaging the treated areas for about 6 hours after the injections. The treated areas can be washed with a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil® Cerave® or Dove® unscented.
  • Avoid dental procedures (including cleaning) 2 weeks post-filler treatment.
